"Students from dozens of Catholic schools get EITC grants"

[Commentary: Interesting is what I would say about this one. Apparently, the Catholic Schools and Catholic High Schools of from the Archdiocese in the City of Brotherly Love have been on a road to recovery lately. To an extant, the same can be said for the Catholic Schools of Chicago. But that's just me of course. -Edward Lamb]

If a student tries to start one of the 25 computers at Our Lady Guadalupe Catholic School, chances are they will be waiting.

"I don't know if we're actually going to be able to log in or not. We might be sitting here for a minute. It has been six minutes, and I still can't log in," said Joe Schramp, principal at Our Lady Guadalupe Catholic School."

"Catholic schools north of Boston boast of higher SAT scores, more students enrolling in college and a culture that emphasizes social consciousness and awareness.
But during tough economic times, choosing to shell out a few extra thousand dollars per year on your child’s education is no easy decision.
The Burke family, of Topsfield, has seen both sides of the coin. Their oldest son, Collin, went through the Topsfield public school system while their two younger sons, Ryan and Sean, attended Austin Preparatory School in Reading.
“We are really a hybrid family,” said Paula Burke. “My husband went to Catholic schools all his life, but I went to public schools my entire life and graduated from Salem High School.”"

“Federal Takeover of Catholic Education”

Read all about it @:

"That’s the headline of Anne Hendershott’s must-read piece in Crisis magazine on how Catholic schools across the country are overturning their curricula in the name of obedience to the Common Core initiative, which is nominally state-led but whose contents are effectively controlled by the federal government. Catholic schools are chucking their curricula for Common Core in large part because the organizations controlling the SAT, ACT and GED are all strutting around bragging that they’re all going to be super-duper “aligned” to Common Core, even though nobody really knows what that means at this point because the federally funded assessment consortia haven’t yet released their plans for what national Common Core testing will consist of."

"Jasper catholic schools considering merger"

http://www.14news.com/story/23594793/jasper-catholic-schools-considering-merger

DUBOIS CO., IN (WFIE) -

The catholic schools in Jasper say they want to merge and create a new parochial school system.

The details of the merger between Jasper's Catholic Schools have not yet been worked out, but Father Gary Kaiser says Holy Family Elementary, Precious Blood Elementary, and St. Mary's Preschool will eventually all merger under one new catholic school system.

"The idea is not a new one," Father Kaiser says.
Father Kaiser says Jasper's Catholic Parishes have been searching for a way to make the schools more efficient, ever since middle-schoolers moved from Precious Blood to Holy Family in 1991. Kaiser, as well as other school officials, believe this merger will do that.

"Will Philadelphia’s Catholic Schools Be Resurrected?"

[Five months old, but still relevant. -Edward Lamb]

http://www.phillymag.com/articles/philadelphias-parochial-catholic-schools-resurrected/

"I walk in and see Linda Walters, who is now Linda Walters McSwigan, and I recognize her instantly because even when she was a little girl she had the face of an adult, droopy and fixed and serious. She ran for classroom president in fifth grade, the same year in which I managed the campaign of Michael Tobin, who was our class’s most handsome, athletic and popular kid; one night he and I sat in his kitchen as I glued stars to a colorful poster and whipped up the memorable slogan “With Tobin the Terrific, You’re Always on Top!” All of the other “campaigns” gave out favors—licorice, Fun Dip—to woo voters. I did, too, but not to the other candidates, nor to their campaign managers. If nothing else, Catholic school teaches you tactical thinking.

I cheek-kiss Linda and a few other girls from Resurrection of Our Lord grammar school, Class of 1977, here for our 35th reunion. An odd year to mark, but Jimmy Lamplugh didn’t make the 25-year and he’s in from Ireland and what the hell, the beer will be good. We’re in a wedding-factory-type hall in the Northeast, a few miles from our old school in Rhawnhurst. About 70 graduates are in attendance—a decent turnout from a class of 120, especially when you consider the troubling fact that eight of us are dead."

"Chicago Catholic Grammar Schools See Attendance Growth"

"For the first time in 48 years Catholic grammar schools in Chicago and surrounding suburbs grew in population, by more than 1,300 students.
“It’s gratifying to see all the hard work in improving Catholic schools recognized in increased enrollment,” Cardinal Francis George said in a statement.
After so many years of declining enrollment, the Chicago Archdiocese hopes this marks a new trend that will continue to see growth.
“For nearly 50 years there has been a story of declining student enrollment in our Catholic schools, and my hope in achieving this milestone of growth is to continue rewriting the script for our Catholic school families and our Church,” Sr. M. Paul McCaughey, superintendent of Archdiocese of Chicago Catholic Schools, said."
