Commentary: Apparently, this becoming the case in some of the Catholic Schools in the country. I mean, first Common Core, now this. But there is something to note, and that the Catholic School Student is in fact, capable of rallying together in the service of something they believe is right.

Administrators long knew about his relationship, Griffin said, but were comfortable looking the other way. Going public and being legal was too much. It's the Catholic Church's twisted version of Don't Ask, Don't Tell.
Ironically, had Griffin taught in New Jersey, where he resides and plans to wed, he would be legally protected from discrimination based on his sexual orientation. Almost half of the states have enacted similar laws.
Pennsylvania, you will be shocked to learn, is not among them, though there is pending legislation. An earlier effort failed to make it out of committee.

A female after-school program coordinator at a Hayward Catholic school has been arrested on suspicion of sexually abusing a male student beginning when he was 12, police said today.

Police said they began their investigation on Nov. 18 after they were informed of a possible incident of child sexual abuse.

They said they learned that the victim, who is now 14, has allegedly been in a sexual relationship with the suspect, 29-year-old Mia Cummings of Oakland, since he was 12."

"CANTON - “We don't know what to do.  This is where we wanted to send our daughter,” said Josette Brooks crying at a vigil held at St. Joseph Catholic School in Canton Wednesday night.
The vigil was held as a peaceful protest to the changes announced by the Diocese of Youngstown late Tuesday.

Those changes involve several Catholic schools across Stark County but in Canton, these changes mean the closure of St. Joseph, a school that’s been around since 1902.
At the vigil, parents told stories of how their parents and grandparents attended the school.
Allison Gardner, a former student said, “Here it's more like a family and everybody cares about each other here.”

Losing the school’s community is what parents and students said they are most upset about.
Members of the Diocese said reasons for St. Joseph’s closure include population changes and less kids sitting at their desks."

"Church Must Let Schools Remain Separate Entities, Says Catholic Leader"

read all about it @ http://www.huffingtonpost.com/cara-mcdonough/church-must-let-schools-r_b_4373236.html

"There is a dissonance in today's Catholic Church. The new pope's resonance with so many church members -- as he openly distances himself from ongoing Church struggles regarding issues like abortion, gay marriage and the role of women -- shows that among more progressive Catholics, there is a true desire for change.

Like many Catholics, I believe this change cannot possibly arrive without the support of Catholic leaders.  That's why it is incredibly enlightening to speak to outspoken Catholic leaders like Brother Louis DeThomasis, who, this summer, introduced his latest book.

In the clearly written and easily digestible, "Dynamic of Catholic Education: Letting the Catholic School Be School," DeThomasis, who has been a major player in Catholic education for 40 years, documents some of the profound struggles he feels currently exist within the expansive realm of Catholic education; a world that encompasses some of our nation's most respected grade schools and universities.

On the one hand, explains the always-passionate DeThomasis during an interview with me, is the Catholic hierarchy imposing strict dogmatic and practical regulations on all institutions with a Church affiliation; on the other, the students and educators -- many progressive Catholics among them -- trying to navigate these rules while not breaking from their faith entirely.

"You have to please the church, the bishops and the alumni," he explains of the latter group, which is therefore torn between fully exploring academic pursuits and trying to avoid trouble with the higher-ups."

"TOWN OF MENASHA - Catholic parishes in the Neenah-Menasha area have begun raising money to build a new middle school.

The Twin Cities Catholic Education System has announced a plan to build the school on the campus of St. Mary Central High School in the town of Menasha. The new building would replace the existing Seton Middle School in Menasha, which was built in 1941.

TCCES says five local business leaders have pledged $6.5 million toward the project. The goal is for the five parishes to raise another $3 million by June 30 so construction can begin in July and the school can open in September 2015.

School leaders say there are many advantages to building the school on the existing high school campus. Students will have access to the new fine arts education center and technology classrooms. The campus provides access to green space and the Jane's Woods area. Outdoor athletic practice and game facilities are also available. The centralized location also simplifies transportation for families, TCCES leaders say."

"It would appear that parents have been asking that very question in increasing numbers. Parochial schools are facing greater competition from other private schools, alternative schools, and charter schools. In addition, they are still located where American parishes have traditionally been established: in the hearts of cities, clustered around now-vanished ethnic neighborhoods. I volunteered to serve on the parish council of a church on the Upper East Side in New York. We inherited a school that was in financial, educational, and demographic ruin. In the space of one year the archdiocese closed the school and merged it with another. A friend, pastor of a parish six blocks away, fought the good fight for as long as he could; his school soon closed, as well. According to a recent article in USA Today, enrollment in Catholic schools fell 12 percent during the 2012-2013 school year. In that same article, school administrators outline their plan of attack: new stuff, iPads, Apple TV, Smart Boards! It makes me wince. Here we go on that iceberg, again."

Commentary: Now, this is the same old, same old recurrence: someone literally finds out that Catholic Education's gone belly up, and wonders why. Little do they know that it was actually the students who are the problem. But not only are we, the Catholic School Students are the problem, we are also the key to Catholic Education solution. As I watch the decline of Catholic Education within the United States, I wonder "why won't everyone realize that without Catholic School Students, there cannot be any Catholic Education".

"WORCESTER — The low enrollment that has St. Mary's Junior/Senior High School on the brink of closing is far from unique to that parish school.

In the city as a whole, the number of Worcester children enrolled in Catholic schools in the 2012-13 school year was less than half what it was in the 1983-1984, the earliest comparison year on the Worcester public schools' Oct. 1 enrollment report.

St. Mary's was down to approximately 90 students in Grades 7-12 when the Rev. Thaddeus X. Stachura, headmaster, announced this month that he planned to close St. Mary's. He said the elementary school would remain open. Since then, Bishop Robert J. McManus has given school supporters 75 days to come up with a plan to save it.

St. Mary's was the last parish-supported high school in Central Massachusetts. Other high schools, such as Holy Name and St. Peter-Marian, are run by the diocese, and still others, such as St. John's High School in Shrewsbury and Notre Dame Academy in Worcester, are private. Parish-run secondary schools have faced special challenges."

"Catholic schools within the Diocese of Santa Rosa, which includes Napa, will be adopting the new Common Core education standards — despite opposition from a group of Catholic scholars.
The Common Core aims to unify the standards for English and math so that all students graduate career- and college-ready. While supporters, including those in local Catholic schools, say the Common Core will raise academic standards, opponents — including more than 130 Catholic scholars — believe the standards are a step backward. Common Core-educated children, the scholars wrote in a letter, “will not be prepared to do authentic college work.”
The letter, signed by 132 Catholic scholars, was recently sent to each Catholic bishop in the country. The letter stated that the Common Core would negatively impact the character and curriculum of schools and implementing the new standards would be a “grave disservice” to Catholic education."

“You’re not a princess. Prepare for real life.”
Mercy Academy in Louisville, Ky., has crafted the pointed proclamation in an effort to show young women that the fairy tales they grew up watching and reading aren’t necessarily reality.

"The following is part of an occasional series on the changing face of the Roman Catholic Church in Fayette County due to population declines in members and priests that are affecting parishes and schools.

After a recommendation was made to close All Saints Regional Catholic School in Masontown in 2005, the community and Roman Catholic Diocese of Greensburg worked together to keep the facility open.
But according to the diocese, the sharp decline in enrollment, 100 students in 2007-08 to just 62 last year, hit too hard and caused the school to run a deficit.
With only 41 students registered for this fall, the diocese announced the school would shut its doors for good.
The closing is another in a steady trend of fading Catholic schools in the county as diocesan officials report that as the number of children attending parishes in Fayette County decreases, so do the chances of a climbing enrollment."

Commentary: Yes, I agree that Catholic Education within all dioceses and archdioceses are on the decline, and not just the ones in Fayette County in Pennsylvania. However, I do want to point out that, whenever anyone talks about Catholic Education, what is their definition of what they mean by Catholic Education? "Alliance Defending Freedom attorneys have filed a federal lawsuit against the Obama administration on behalf of Ave Maria School of Law in Naples, Fla. The lawsuit challenges the constitutionality of the administration’s mandate that religious employers provide insurance coverage for abortifacients, sterilization, and contraception to employees regardless of religious or moral objections.

“Faith-based educational institutions should be free to live and operate according to the faith they teach and espouse,” said Senior Legal Counsel Matt Bowman. “If the government can force Ave Maria to violate its faith in order to exist, then the government can do the same or worse to others.”

“Our school believes in living out our religious convictions,” said Ave Maria School of Law President and Dean Eugene R. Milhizer, who writes and speaks nationally on the issue of religious freedom, the abortion pill mandate, and the Catholic Church. “The First Amendment protects Americans from mandates that require us to act against our deeply held religious convictions. But the mandate leaves us with no real choice: we must either comply and abandon our religious freedom and conscience, or resist and be fined for our faith.”"

"Bucking a national trend, enrollment at most of Long Island's Catholic high schools is strong and holding steady, even as falling numbers of students in the diocese's elementary schools forced closures and the region's economy struggles to regain its pre-recession footing.

Seven of the 10 high schools showed enrollment gains over the decade from the 2003-04 school year through 2012-13, while three saw declines. One school, the all-girls Academy of St. Joseph in Brentwood, closed in 2009.

The stability on Long Island stems from a combination of factors -- the number of Catholics here and families' desire to have their children in a faith-based high school; the institutions' academic rigor, traditions and strict rules; and the modest tuition cost compared with other private schools."

"Louisville's Catholic schools will continue implementing elements of the Common Core education standards despite pushback from a group of Catholic scholars.
The Common Core standards change what students learn in English and math and have been adopted by 45 states—Kentucky being the first. Last week, 130 Catholic scholars from around the country signed a letter claiming the standards do not adequately prepare students for college-level work and that they undermine Catholic education.
The letter sent to U.S. bishops requesting Catholic schools drop the Common Core standards or halt implementation.

Personally, I don't buy it, seeing that I am one of the people who thinks quite highly of American Catholic Education.

"Catholic school officials in Berks County are bringing in the sheaves, but not in the conventional way.Using advertising, along with tuition and tax incentives, in the past two years Catholic schools in Berks and across the five-county Diocese of Allentown have seen modest increases in enrollment.

An increase of about 0.5 percent might not seem like much, but after 15 years of declining enrollment, even modest gains are welcome, said diocese spokesman Matt Kerr.

Enrollment in the diocese's 36 elementary schools, seven high schools and three special learning centers totals 12,419. Allentown is the only one of Pennsylvania's eight dioceses to see school enrollment increase in each of the last two years."

Catholic schools are chucking their curricula for Common Core in large part because the organizations controlling the SAT, ACT and GED are all strutting around bragging that they’re all going to be super-duper “aligned” to Common Core, even though nobody really knows what that means at this point because the federally funded assessment consortia haven’t yet released their plans for what national Common Core testing will consist of."

The catholic schools in Jasper say they want to merge and create a new parochial school system.

The details of the merger between Jasper's Catholic Schools have not yet been worked out, but Father Gary Kaiser says Holy Family Elementary, Precious Blood Elementary, and St. Mary's Preschool will eventually all merger under one new catholic school system.

Father Kaiser says Jasper's Catholic Parishes have been searching for a way to make the schools more efficient, ever since middle-schoolers moved from Precious Blood to Holy Family in 1991. Kaiser, as well as other school officials, believe this merger will do that.

"I walk in and see Linda Walters, who is now Linda Walters McSwigan, and I recognize her instantly because even when she was a little girl she had the face of an adult, droopy and fixed and serious. She ran for classroom president in fifth grade, the same year in which I managed the campaign of Michael Tobin, who was our class’s most handsome, athletic and popular kid; one night he and I sat in his kitchen as I glued stars to a colorful poster and whipped up the memorable slogan “With Tobin the Terrific, You’re Always on Top!” All of the other “campaigns” gave out favors—licorice, Fun Dip—to woo voters. I did, too, but not to the other candidates, nor to their campaign managers. If nothing else, Catholic school teaches you tactical thinking.

I cheek-kiss Linda and a few other girls from Resurrection of Our Lord grammar school, Class of 1977, here for our 35th reunion. "Catholic schools raise tuition amidst an enrollment decline"

http://triblive.com/news/adminpage/4675123-74/schools-enrollment-diocese#axzz2f6CZEplr

"Overall enrollment is down and tuition up in the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh, Superintendent Michael Latusek said at a news conference on Thursday marking the start of the school year.
The diocese is down about 800 students from last year, he said, when enrollment was about 21,000 in preschool to 12th grade.

Robert L. Paserba, secretary for Catholic education and evangelism, said the decline occurred mainly in elementary schools, where he said families with more than one child might be financially strained to pay for private education.

Tuition for the first child a family enrolls this school year increased about $150 for an elementary student to $3,600 and rose $550 to $9,500 total for a high school student. If a family enrolls more than one child, the district works with the family to lessen the cost for any additional child based on income and other factors."

In the Diocese of Columbus, a Physical Education Teacher has been fired by her Catholic High School because she was a lesbian. Apparently, this woman said she was on a Columbus Newspaper (it was about her mothers death). And according to one aritcle, its through an anonymous tip by a parent within the school.

Since marriage is solely between a man and a woman and that anything other than that is irrelevant to such, is this fair punishment to free men (or woman in this case)?

The Competition for an extra dollar

http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/Philadelphia-Pleads-for-120M-for-City-Schools-203420081.html

In Philly, the push for 120 million dollars in state aid is underway, and the American Catholic School System is spearheading it with unlikely allies. One of them is the very one that is slowly destroying us; the Charter School.

Unfortunately, I don't understand how this is going to benefit us because not only that we're going to get an extra 120 million in state aid, but we're also granting the others more ways to reduce our numbers. But, money is money, and I know that a cut of that 120 million should go to us would buy us more sand in the clock, for now.

http://southtownstar.suntimes.com/neighborhoodstar/evergreenpark/19079548-521/mother-mcauley-honorees-committed-to-catholic-education-service.html

http://www.mothermcauley.org/

I'll be honest, its actually the largest all-girls school in the nation, and a one of a kind as well. Kind of like how Benedictine in Richmond is a Military School and a Catholic School, Mother Mcauley is a Catholic High School with the curriculum of a liberal arts institution.

Can't say "Confidential", without inaccuracy.

http://jezebel.com/catholic-prep-school-says-our-sexting-story-isnt-accur-472692931

According to Paul VI, they said the the whole story that was pruported all over the internets was in some ways inaccurate.

But, according to that website, the school seems to have a history of letting the athletes there go uncheck at times.

After this, I can't say much about them because I don't want this site to be taken down by complaints of some kind, so I'll just put the nail in the coffin and be done with it.

Catholic School converted to Brewery

http://wnep.com/2013/04/12/brewers-transform-catholic-school-and-convent/

Ever wonder what happens after a Catholic School closes? Usually, it'll be converted into old folks homes complete with chapel of course, but this one was actually unexpected.

A Catholic School in Wilkes-Barre Township is undergoing the process of becoming a brewery, yes a place where beer is produced. What was once a place of learning, is now a place of the production of booze.

Remember, this is what will happen to us if we do not get our act together.

Girl sexted photos in Paul VI causes suspension

http://www.thefrisky.com/2013-04-11/teen-girl-kicked-out-of-catholic-school-for-sexting-sext-recipients-still-at-school-though/

[Bear in mind, that the website in question is something I wouldn't want to visit for any reason, but since this article applies to us, I'll be posting it. Whoever posted this article did it in the most unprofessional way, and hopefully you can read between the lines as to what this person's saying. Now I do know that the decision is or is not being put underway, so remember that just in case someone there reads my blog by chance. -Lamb]

In Paul VI in Fairfax, VA, a manager in the schools lacrosse team has been sexting to one of the players, and eventually it spread to the rest of the team. Unfortunately, the school reacted by suspending the girl for one day.

People, what has gotten into our heads? Have we already just reached the epitome of insanity because normal people don't do these types of things because its embarassing. Why the hell whould you show the whole world your body like that?

And remember, I do not agree with this woman because she doesn't know what's it like to be part of the American Catholic School System. I do.

The downside of the Chicago Archdiocese's Plan

http://ncronline.org/news/faith-parish/strategic-plan-chicagos-catholic-schools-stresses-new-funding

Anyone in Chicago could more or less know this, but I'll give it another shout out.

Apparently, if you have happened to have been following the latest plan in the Archdiocese of Chicago's
agenda to save their section of the American Catholic School System.

Bear in mind, that their plan calls for more funding, especially when the whole point of it was to save money, so they can have adequate funds for their schools. In theory, its a good idea to a certain degree, but when done in practice, it only works when theres money to throw at it so that the Catholic Schools in question, could be saved.

So, what if the Archdiocese of Chicago has no money to keep these schools running if the plan is used to its maximum capacity? Probably absorbed into the Charter Schools I suppose.

A Financial and Organized People

http://www.northjersey.com/news/202115431_Cedar_Grove_Catholic_school_to_host_its_first_student_marketplace_on_April_12.html

St. Catherine of Siena (SCS) School, as Verona-Cedar Grove Times, has opened its first ever TREP$ Marketplace earlier today. Items that were sold were nothing too complex, but were simple in nature, such has custom painted bookmarks, services for Babysitting, and even Jewelry were among the products and services sold.

This shows that the people of the American Catholic School System are capable of both the managing and the sale of items and services. If we can organize ourselves like this, only much larger than this, we surely use it to raise money for the schools we go to.

Now, lets see if we can expand our list of sale items...

The People's Will Manifested

http://blog.chron.com/texaspolitics/2013/04/catholic-leaders-school-children-swarm-capitol/

Okay granted, you people are probably outside with sports, or indoors, doing homework, but a words of good new for all, my folk of the American Catholic School System.

In this nations capital, 1,000 of our kind has rallied there as part of "Catholic Faith in Action Advocacy Day".

This shows that, we as a people can effectively mount up efforts to save the schools we currently go to, so that future generations can have the same experience as we and many others before us did. Of the 1000 of our brothers and sisters, could you see one of them as a potential leader, a spokesperson and servant of the people?

Nothing is impossible; if there is a will, there is a way. Saving the American Catholic School System from destruction is one of them.

Catholic School donates gifts to Needy Kids

http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20130408/submitted/130409866/?interstitial=1

In Roselle, the students in St. Walter Catholic School are currently organizing a drive for donating party supplies and to needy children in their area.

This here is an example of altruism, that we, the people of the American Catholic School System are truly capable of improving and generally giving back to our local communities. If we, as a people, were to unify ourselves through a common idea and concept, then we could elevate ourselves from our current situations.
