"Overall enrollment is down and tuition up in the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh, Superintendent Michael Latusek said at a news conference on Thursday marking the start of the school year.
The diocese is down about 800 students from last year, he said, when enrollment was about 21,000 in preschool to 12th grade.
Robert L. Paserba, secretary for Catholic education and evangelism, said the decline occurred mainly in elementary schools, where he said families with more than one child might be financially strained to pay for private education.
Tuition for the first child a family enrolls this school year increased about $150 for an elementary student to $3,600 and rose $550 to $9,500 total for a high school student. If a family enrolls more than one child, the district works with the family to lessen the cost for any additional child based on income and other factors."
